We drove up to Wigan this weekend to catch up with wedding planning. Rogerapos;s share of this involved watching his football team limp to a 1all draw while I drove round scenic parts of Lancashire trying to find my bridal beauty trial appointment� then we looked at hotels for our guests.
Iapos;m glad I did so, because we found that one of the cheapest is actually the nicest by far ("The Beeches") . The Britannia up the road was positively grim though� -we couldnapos;t even make ourselves stay for a trial drink at the bar . I canapos; t believe itapos;s part of the same chain as the Adelphi in Liverpool.
The two 4 star hotels were bright and clean but rather soulless so weapos;ll definitely be steering people who are staying over to The Crown, The Beeches the Premier.
We accidentally collided with two wedding fairs at the hotels.� This was actually jolly useful -a sort of speed -dating version of real shopping . Rogerapos;s tolerance for shopping is notoriously low - his upper limit for shopping is about 29 minutes even with free cake samples .� We managed to get round all four menswear stands before I had to take Roger back to the Crown for a reviving Sunday lunch and an extra turn at the beer festival to recover from his ordeal and I now know what he wants to wear .��
We also met Patsy Slevin , the brewer who will be making our wedding beers after the gourmet beer dinner . This was 5 courses each accompanied by a specially chosen beer so we may have been more enthusiastic than coherent . I really liked the cherry beer which accompanied the mango coulis with soft meringue and chilli chocolate shavings but the chaps were keener on Patsyapos;s Nutty Slack which went with the seared scallops on bacon rosti so I ended up with a lot of cherry beer.
The Crownapos;s chef is very hot on free range, locally sourced and organic produce but they donapos;t seem to get many vegetarians in . Of course, black pudding is a vegetable once you cross the Lancashire border . ..
